Prayers and Squares
Can you touch a prayer? Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it’s part of a prayer quilt. Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. Unlike many other organizations that make quilts for charitable causes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts.
The Prayers and Squares ministry started as an outgrowth of the Health Ministry. This ministry began in 1992 at Hope United Methodist Church in Rancho Bernardo. Through Prayers & Squares, literally hundreds of quilts have been distributed, each a special gift of love. They have been made for sick babies, for cancer and AIDS patients, for adults and children facing surgery or difficult family situations – each for someone in special need of prayer.
The motto is “It’s not about the quilt; it’s all about the prayers.”
Anyone may ask for a prayer quilt whether a member or associated with a member of our church. The only requirement is that the recipient of the quilt gives permission for the prayer that she/he requests. The other rule is that we accept no payment for a prayer quilt. It is a gift of love and prayers, which cannot be bought and sold.
A prayer square may be given to anyone without the same permission requirement, and several have been sent to our military personnel in Iraq.
Prayers and Squares meets on the fourth Saturday of every month in Room 22 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon. You do not have to be a quilter to participate because there are many tasks that do not require sewing expertise.
Contact Doty Kelley or Lois Knowlton if you are interested in participating or in contributing something for the cost of supplies. All are welcome. For more information about the Prayers and Squares Ministry, see their webpage.
